The new version of the 200-meter mechanical diver, loved by fans around the world for its puffer fish-like shape, is now available in 42mm, the original size of the series, to commemorate the 35th anniversary of the PROMASTER.
PROMASTER – A Tradition of Excellence In the realm of building watches for adventure and sporting endeavours, CITIZEN has always demonstrated continual innovation. For example, in the introduction of the first Japanese made water-resistant mechanical watch known as the “Parawater” in 1959.
In 1963, in order to demonstrate the water-resistant qualities of this model, as well as to aid in tidal research, more than 100 “Parawater” watches, each suspended in a buoy, were launched into the Pacific Ocean. All the watches that were collected later on were found to be operating normally, with the furthest travelled buoy found off the coast of Manzanita in the U.S. state of Oregon, some three years later in 1966.
This culture of producing high performance watches would culminate in a brand-new chapter 35 years ago in 1989, with the debut of the PROMASTER professional sports watch series.
Conceived to challenge the limits of the professionals who would use them, the new PROMASTER series would embody the most important qualities necessary for high performing sports watches. These qualities would include a focus on functionality, enabled by innovative technology, durability, for use in extreme environments, and lastly, a thorough consideration for all points related to the safety of the user.
The PROMASTER brand would be divided into three separate pillars: PROMASTER Land, specializing in Field watches for adventurers, PROMASTER SKY, Pilot’s watches for global players going to the ends of the earth and beyond, and PROMASTER SEA, Diver’s watches for the ocean’s deepest depths.

These factors made it not only a watch that diving professionals could use in the course of their work, but also as a reliable daily watch for general users.

The 2024 update of series, the NY016 comes with an updated movement and a return to the original 42mm size
The new NY016 for this year, builds on the legacy of the original NY004 that had been produced over an astounding 15-year run, as well as updates that have been given to the model ever since it was relaunch-ed in 2018 as the NY008.
Aesthetically, the NY008 brought with it a refreshed look, with redesigned hour indices that match CITIZEN’s first AQUALAND model, the iconic JP2000, as opposed to the circle indices of the NY004 series. However, everything else, including the case design were kept true to the original.
Subsequent to this, many different models have been introduced, with new dial colours, metal bracelet options, a larger 44mm size, as well as a model in Duratect DLC Titanium, all of these models, with one exception, came with the Cal.8203.
The new NY016 however, comes with an updated movement – the Cal.8204, which was first seen in the 2021 model, the NY013. The Cal.8204, offers an improvement in specification over the Cal.8203 as it comes with hacking seconds – the ability to stop the seconds hand in order to more precisely set the time.
Additionally, the NY016 will return to the original 42mm size of the NY004. In 2020, CITIZEN changed the size of the NY011 to a 44mm, in response to market demand for a watch with a bigger and bolder wrist presence. In 2024 however, the new NY016 will return the series to the original 42mm case size, a move that not only harkens back to the iconic NY004, but is also easier to wear and thus accessible for more people.

Additionally, it comes with a brown bezel colour with a vintage feel that reflects the preciousness of time. The other three models include the NY0169-66E, with a black dial with black bezel and rose gold markings, the NY0161-63L, with a blue dial and with a blue bezel, and lastly, the NY0168-64A, with a white dial and a green bezel.

All watches will come with a limited-edition box shaped like a scuba tank in the colour of the golden copper dial, the highlight model in the series. In addition to the metal band, the new NY016 series comes with a polyurethane strap which is suitable for diving.
